How did you get involved in lumberjack sports?
While attending Finger Lakes Community College, I went to a
woodmen's team practice with a friend and tried the axe throw. I hit
the target the first few times, and I was hooked. Ironically, the axe
throw is now my least favorite event. After competing at the Finger
Lakes for a year I transferred to SUNY ESF and continued competing.
When did you begin participating/competing in lumberjack sports and the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Series?
My first lumberjack contest was the Northeast Collegiate Spring
Meet in 1993 at the Pinkerton Academy in Derry, NH. In 2005, I
competed for the first time in the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Series in
Menomonie, WS.
How do you train for the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Series and other lumberjack competitions?
I cut and split firewood and train the six STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Series events.
Best/strongest STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Series discipline:
Best event? That can change every other day. I have had the
most success with the sawing events over the years, but I love the
chopping events.
Any advice for the collegiate competitors?
This sport is like everything else in life; you get out of it what you put in.
What pro athlete/celebrity would you like to see try one of the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Series disciplines?
Tim Tebow. His ESPN documentary talked about him chopping wood
to keep in shape. It would be interesting to see him give a competition
a try.
