How did you get involved in lumberjack sports?
I started competing in lumberjack sports when I went to NC State University in 2006.
When did you begin participating/competing in lumberjack sports and the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Series?
The first time I competed in the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Series was in
2009. I competed in the Collegiate Qualifier in Arkansas.
How do you train for the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Series and other lumberjack competitions?
I train by going through each event. It's important to analyze
what you are doing right or wrong with each event in practice. Going
through the motions of each event in practice will make them become
second nature on competition day. (Or at least that's what we hope will
happen!)
I also lift weights as a training technique for TIMBERSPORTS®. I do not put nearly as much emphasis on lifting as I did in college. This is because time spent actually going through the motions of each event is much more valuable to me.
Are you related to any current or former STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Series competitors?
No
Best/strongest STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Series discipline:
I used to think Underhand Chop was my strongest event, but lately it has been Stock Saw.
Hobbies:
For the past year my only hobby has been starting a forestry
consulting business (Plank Road Forestry, LLC). That seems to take up
all of my time, but it does keep me in the forests of North and South
Carolina which I enjoy. Most of what I do in forestry consulting could
be described as a hobby to some; things like prescribed burning,
wildlife food plot management, Marking for (2nd, 3rd, 4th) Thinning
Harvest, Hardwood Silviculture, Clear-cut sale setup, etc.
I do also try to find time for whitetail deer hunting and duck hunting.
Any advice for the collegiate competitors?
If you are just starting out and don't have a coach, then find
someone who knows what they are doing and ask them if you can practice
with them. Lots of pointless time gets wasted on practicing the wrong
way. The more you practice correctly, the better you will become.
What pro athlete/celebrity would you like to see try one of the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Series disciplines?
I would like to see Daniel Tosh try Springboard Chop.
